What You Can Do to Support Environmental and Global Sustainability
We are so used to thinking that businesses, corporations, non-profit organizations – namely, groups with money and power, should make a change toward greater environment and global sustainability, that we often forget the fact that we also have a role to play in preserving the environment and living sustainably. It is easy to think that our actions (positive or negative) have no effect on the environment, because no matter what we do, we are just an unimportant minority, and we do not have the power to change how the world moves.
There are many people who assume that the change must come from the upper, group levels of the society – the state, large corporations, and so on, and very few the ones who understand that change comes from individuals. However, each of us can do so many things to support environmental sustainability, and coordinating our behavior could lead to dramatic changes. Although we could think that our actions do not matter, in fact, even the smallest things we could do can facilitate change, including the change that will eventually come from corporations or large networks of individuals.
Preserving nature and fighting for sustainability is an obligation of every person living on this planet. Every day, we make decisions that have the power to influence the environment one way or the other. Take, for example, green products. There are countless green products on the market, and purchasing them could affect the environment positively by reducing our carbon footprint.
Green products can be either those that have been produced in an environmentally friendly manner, like organic vegetables, or recycled products, or those that impact the environment less negatively than similar products, like solar panels, or energy efficient appliances. By purchasing these products, we not only reduce our carbon footprint, but we also contribute to their gain in popularity and development of the industry. If most of us purchased green vegetables, the products made using harmful chemicals would eventually disappear from the market. Although it remains an ideal, this perspective is an objective of many environmentally concerned individuals and businesses.
By adopting a lifestyle concerned with protecting the environment and energy saving, we can practice sustainable living and support global sustainability. A simple way to do it would be choosing green transportation over driving our personal cars, and this includes using public transportation, bikes or environmentally friendly cars (hybrid cars). Another way implies reducing fuel and electricity consumption: saving energy by turning off energy consuming sources when not using them, turning the air-conditioning system off completely when the temperature is bearable, using solar panels or alternative energy sources. Similarly, we could try to use less water, by taking short showers, using the washing machine only when we have a full load of clothes, and purchasing energy efficient appliances.
Thankfully, there are plenty of environmentally friendly options people can choose from. We have the opportunity to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle and practice sustainable living. It is all a matter of personal decisions and acknowledging that our actions have the power to benefit the environment.
